Book Launch: Economics and Austerity in Europe

Event Date: Wednesday 19th October 2016

Book launch for ‘Economics and austerity in Europe: Gendered impacts and sustainable alternatives’

Austerity

WBG and the Foundation for European Progressive Studies (FEPS) joined together to launch a new collection of research on economics, austerity and gender at the House of Lords on 19th October 2016.

The book edited by WBG’s Sue Himmelweit, Hannah Bargawi (SOAS) and Giovanni Cozzi (Greenwich) brings together papers by leading feminist economists to analyse the impact of austerity on gender inequalities across Europe. With a combination of country case studies and cross-country empirical analysis, the book reveals the scope and channels through which women and men have been impacted by austerity policies in Europe, and goes on to offer readers the opportunity to assess the feasibility and implications of a feminist alternative to continued austerity.

The launch was chaired by Baroness Prosser and panelists included Zita Gurmai, former MEP, and Heather Wakefield, Head of Local Government at Unison.
